1654: Insurrection aboard an unnamed British ship, bound for Barbados (voyage 99026)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Barbados in 1654, the people aboard an unnamed British ship rose against the crew. They had been taken at Gambia.

The record gives the numbers as: 60 people were embarked; 20 were landed; 40 died on the crossing.

Captain: Hiway, Thomas. Flag: Great Britain. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “sold slaves in Americas – subsequent fate unknown.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
