Yayou, abandoned by the 21st demi-brigade, is killed at a plantation in the mornes of La Selle by grenadiers of the 21st under captain Registre.
Yayou, indeed, after a short halt at Léogane to have his effects and munitions of war carried off, went to establish himself on the Dufort plantation with the 21st demi-brigade and the squadron of cavalry commanded by Jean-Simon, whom he had also drawn along from Port-au-Prince. But Jean-Simon abandoned him in the afternoon to rally to the column commanded by General Marion, composed of the 3rd, 11th and 24th demi-brigades, which Pétion had dispatched in pursuit of the insurgents. Yayou then made his way toward Fort Campan, situated on the plantation of the same name, in the *mornes* of La Selle. During his march the whole of the 21st deserted him, with the exception of a few noncommissioned officers. And, surrounded on 26 July in a house of the plantation by a company of grenadiers of the 21st, commanded by Captain Registre, he fought hand to hand with that officer, who had only the order to take him prisoner, but who, in the face of violent resistance, saw himself compelled to put him to the bayonet.
