Magloire-Ambroise, in prison at Jacmel, poisons himself as Pétion’s arrival is announced.

Haitian

Magloire at first protested his innocence; but soon he confessed his criminal enterprise and abandoned himself to the most violent grief. The announcement of the approaching arrival of President Pétion seemed to make him lose his head. How could he face the gaze of a man who had always been so kindly toward him and whose esteem he had betrayed? Sunk in his somber reflections, Magloire managed to procure poison. In the night of 7 to 8 he ended ignominiously a career that had been useful to liberty and to independence.
