Villate withdraws to the Martelière fort after Laveaux’s release
Haitian
There is a fort where Villate withdrew on 21 March 1796, after the release of Governor Laveaux, whom he had had arrested at the Cap. On 12 May, Sonthonax, or the civil commission, returned to the Cap with a few officers. As soon as he appeared at the gates of the town, which he had saved several times by his great courage, all the former free Blacks and jaunes, and almost all the white burghers, rushed out to meet him, pressed around him, covered him with laurels, accompanied him to the national palace with great acclamations and with cries of: Long live the Republic, long live the civil commissioners, long live Villate, the savior of the Cap. It was a true triumph for Villate.
Rouzier tells this under the entry MARTELIERE.
