Treaty of Basel cedes the Spanish colony to France

Haitian

Soon the French drove the English out of it and made war on the Spaniards, from whom they took territory on the mainland, where they settled definitively around 1694. The French government sent them help and leaders. In this way the French colony of the western part of Saint-Domingue came into being, which has been an independent nation since 1 January 1804. In 1697 the treaty of Ryswick, signed between France and Spain, confirmed the conquests of the French. On 3 June 1777 Spain and France signed the new treaty of Aranjuez to settle the limits of their possessions in Saint-Domingue. The Spanish possessions in the East, from the Massacre river onward, were called the Spanish Audience or colony of Santo-Domingo. On 22 July 1795, by the treaty of Basel, Spain ceded to France its colony of the East, which the French governor Toussaint-Louverture occupied on 26 January 1801. France was then master of the whole island.
