English attack Beauvais’s camp at Côte; Pétion saves the troops
Haitian
In March 1795, Beauvais, marching against the English at Port-au-Prince, established his headquarters there. On the 18th, his soldiers were quietly cleaning their weapons when they were suddenly attacked by the English. Lieutenant-Colonel Pétion saved the indigène troops from a complete disaster by firing grapeshot at the English with an eight-pounder that he had set up on a rise commanding the road. Rigaud hurried up from Mariani and drove off the English, from whom he took four pieces of cannon. Beauvais and Rigaud offered the English General Horneck to send him the corpse of Markham, left on the battlefield. The English governor accepted this generous offer with gratitude.
Rouzier tells this under the entry Côte.
