Toussaint Louverture reaches San Juan to take possession of the East

Haitian

Toussaint Louverture, going to take possession in 1801 of the eastern part ceded to France by Spain in 1795 by the Treaty of Basel, arrived by the Mirebalais road at San Juan de la Maguana on 4 January. The inhabitants offered no resistance and were treated perfectly. Toussaint continued his route to Azua.

Rouzier tells this under the entry SAN JUAN de MAGUANA ou SAINT JEAN.
