The insurgents seize Saint Rome and are shot
Haitian
SAINT ROME. Quartier lying outside the enclosure of Miragoâne. It was occupied by the Government troops during the insurrection of Boyer Bazelais, in 1883. The cannon of Saint Rome spewed grapeshot upon the rebel town. On 8 January 1884 the insurgents, discouraged, sick, and dying of hunger after the death of their leader, seized it. But there some were for marching forward, the others, certain of death, preferred to die on the spot with arms in hand. The first group reached Petit Goâve and partly saved themselves; the others, who had stayed at St. Rome, were all shot.
Rouzier tells this under the entry SAINT ROME.
