The Gonaïves committee deposes Soulouque and names Geffrard president

Haitian

On 20 December 1859, General Geffrard (Fabre) embarked at Port-au-Prince, toward evening, in a frail canoe, with his son Clodomir, Ernest Roumain, Jean Bart and one of his guides, to go to the Gonaïves and direct the republican movement that overthrew the empire of Soulouque. On the 22nd, the town took up arms, the Republic was proclaimed and the Constitution of 1846 restored to force. On the 23rd, the departmental committee of the Gonaïves pronounced the deposition of Soulouque and the appointment of General Fabre Geffrard to the presidency of Haiti.

Rouzier tells this under the entry Gonaïves (les).
