The congress at Arcahaye, which had recognized Dessalines as commander in chief, broke up and Cangé and his lieutenants reembarked.
Haitian
On 28 floréal (18 May) the congress broke up. Cangé and his lieutenants reembarked. In the passage from Arcahaye to Léogane the flotilla was discovered by a French cruiser squadron. One barge, manned by Laporte, sailing more slowly than the others, was on the point of falling into the power of the cruisers. In so imminent a danger, Laporte, aided by his heroic companions, swiftly stoves in his frail boat and blows out his brains while the others are engulfed in the Ocean amid cries of Long live independence! All proportion kept, can this sublime act not be compared with the end of the *Vengeur*, the glorious French ship? On both sides the same energy, the same love of liberty pushed to its last limits.
