Étienne de La Rigaudelle du Buisson was born at Saint-Marc, Saint-Domingue, on 21 October 1786. His family held two plantations there, in cotton and indigo. He was ordained a Catholic priest on 7 August 1821, became a Jesuit missionary in the United States, and served as president of Georgetown University. He died at Pau, France, on 14 August 1864.
