Salnave defeats Robert Noel’s Cacos at Savane Longue

Haitian

SAVANE LONGUE. Fifth rural section of the commune of Ouanaminthe, arrondissement of Fort-Liberté. Rural school. It was made famous by a celebrated battle on 24 February 1868 between the Government troops, commanded in person by President Salnave, and the bands of Cacos encamped in a fort under the orders of Robert Noel, who were defeated and dispersed. Everything there was burned. The Cacos had built at Camp Robert, at the foot of one of the buttresses of the Mont-Organisé, a fortress of palisades, with two stories, armed with eight cannon and a large copper howitzer (two-barrelled canister guns, in the phrase of the Cacos).

Rouzier tells this under the entry SAVANE LONGUE.
