Salm’s brigade storms Bayonnais and Christophe retreats to the Gonaïves

Haitian

After being driven from Ennery by General Hardy on 21 February 1802, Christophe established himself there, and thus covered the right of the position that Toussaint-Louverture had his army take at the Coupe-à-Pintade to halt Leclerc’s march on the Gonaïves. General Hardy launched against him the brigade of General Salm, which reached the Bayonnais on the 22nd. The European troops advanced against the indigènes at the charge. Despite the liveliest fire, the French chasseurs, without answering it, climbed with incredible skill and agility along the morne of Bayonnais, reached its summit, and saw flee before them, after a bloody fight, General Christophe, who had displayed rare courage, braving death in the front rank of his soldiers. Salm took considerable booty. Christophe withdrew to the Gonaïves.

Rouzier tells this under the entry Bayonnais.
