Salm’s brigade and Hardy’s division camp at Poteaux

Haitian

POTEAUX (les). Quartier of the Arrondissement of the Gonaïves, a small village situated in the rural section of the same name, between Gonaives and Plaisance, commune of the Gonaives. Rural school and chapel. It is a junction point of the main roads of three neighboring arrondissements: Gonaives, Marmelade and Dessalines. On 23 February 1802 the brigade of General Salm and the division of Hardy, marching from Ennery on the Gonaives against Toussaint Louverture, established themselves at Poteaux. On the descent into the plain of the Gonaives, at the top of the village of Poteaux, immediately after the Coupe à Pintade, the traveler passes the rocky and arduous road called the Escaliers, because it is paved in the form of a staircase.

Rouzier tells this under the entry POTEAUX (les).
