Rochambeau repulses Toussaint Louverture from the defile
After being driven back from this defile by Rochambeau on 23 February 1802, Toussaint Louverture rallied his troops on the Périsse habitation. He told his soldiers that the battle he was about to fight against the French would decide their fate; that if defeated they would be plunged back into slavery, but that if victorious they would conquer their liberty forever. They all swore to conquer or die. They drove back Rochambeau, who went to occupy the Ravine à Couleuvre again. When Vernet evacuated the Gonaives at the approach of Leclerc, Toussaint abandoned Périsse to go to meet him at the Pont de l’Estère. Then Rochambeau emerged into the Savanne Désolée and betook himself to the Gonaives to join Leclerc.
Rouzier tells this under the entry PERISSE.
