Rochambeau takes Saint-Michel; his right column scales Marre à la Roche
Haitian
MARRE A LA ROCHE. Position near St. Michel de l’Atalaye. On 19 February 1802 Rochambeau took St. Michel; his right column scaled the Marre à la Roche without firing a shot. This strong position was defended by 400 men well supported by artillery. By this maneuver Rochambeau was to emerge unexpectedly by the Ravine-à-Couleuvre, after securing a retreat on St. Michel, into the plain of Lacroix, called Savanne Désolée, and cut off all retreat from Toussaint by establishing himself between the Gonaïves and the Pont de l’Estère.
Rouzier tells this under the entry MARRE A LA ROCHE.
