Rivière Hérard deposed while at Azua
Haitian
In 1844 President Charles Hérard (Rivière), in his campaign against the Eastern part, halted at Azua, awaiting means of attack to continue his march. While he was in this city, the people pronounced his deposition at Port-au-Prince, and had General Guerrier named president of Haiti on 3 May. General Thomas Hector offered Hérard to force the entry of the capital and to maintain him in power; but the ex-president submitted to the will of the people and asked to withdraw abroad. He retraced his steps and halted on the habitation Drouillard, from where he embarked for Jamaica, where he died.
Rouzier tells this under the entry Azua de Compostela.
