REGULATORY DECREE of the Conseil du Cap, for the establishment of a new Maréchaussée

Haitian

Having seen by the Conseil the remonstrance made to it by the Procureur Général du Roi, containing that the various establishments of Maréchaussées made up to now within the jurisdiction of this Conseil have not had the success expected of them for the relief of the Settlers, in the labor duties they are obliged to perform, both for the search for and pursuit of deserting Soldiers, and for the capture and escort of criminals, and for the ordinary and extraordinary hunts against the marrons; public safety and policing have been neglected to a point where it was to be feared that some unfortunate event might one day occur, if just measures were not taken to remedy it, by making an establishment of a Maréchaussée that can be stable, increasing the number of Officers and Archers who compose it, and engaging them to do their service well by the advantages and prerogatives that will be granted them.
