Rebuilt bridge inaugurated while the President is at Saint Marc
Haitian
A superb bridge, called the Pont de pierres (Stone Bridge) because it was built of cut stone, was laid across the larger of these rivers around 1785. Unfortunately, since this bridge was never repaired, it was carried away by the great river on the evening of 14 August 1891, causing the death of several notable persons who had come to watch the spectacle of the flood waters. The government had it rebuilt immediately, more beautiful, larger and stronger. It is 12 meters long. The work was directed by the engineer Durocher. It was inaugurated on Sunday 5 March 1893 while the President of Haiti was at Saint Marc on his way to the North. The ceremony was imposing and the crowd dense.
Rouzier tells this under the entry SAINT MARC.
