Rebels storm the National Palace, and the week that brings the Marines begins

On the night of 26 to 27 July 1915 generals Charles de Delva, Ermane Robin and Edmond Polynice led an assault on the National Palace, during Rosalvo Bobo’s revolt against President Vilbrun Guillaume Sam. Sam fled. His police chief Charles Oscar Étienne then massacred the political prisoners held in the penitentiary. A crowd killed both men. American Marines landed on 28 July and stayed nineteen years.
