Prophète enters the church of Le Trou by night
The village was established more than a century and a half ago; there is only one street, running from the Northwest to the Southeast as one comes from the Cap. In 1772 a hurricane destroyed it. Cool climate. There falls there each year 2,576 millimeters of rain in the mountains, and 1,479 in the plain. Its church is under the patronage of Saint John the Baptist, whose feast falls on 24 June; it is 75 feet long by 40 wide, and is situated on a square 400 feet in length; it was completed in 1783. On 11 April 1889, during the night, General Anselme Prophète, minister of war of President Légitime, sent against the Northerners, entered the church of Trou with 300 men. At 6 o’clock in the morning he made a hail of bullets rain upon the village. Generals Nord Alexis and Turenne Jean Gilles replied vigorously and put Prophète to rout. The priest of Trou, the abbé Martin, was accused of having favored Anselme; he was interned at the Cap.
Rouzier tells this under the entry TROU (le).
