Port-au-Prince opens the Bicentennial Exposition on its new waterfront

On 8 December 1949 Haiti opened the Bicentennial International Exposition, marking two hundred years since the founding of Port-au-Prince. Held under Dumarsais Estimé and billed as the Festival of Peace, it built the Cité de l’Exposition, with work by Albert Mangonès and Jason Seley. The folkloric performances directed by Jean Léon Destiné and Lina Mathon-Blanchet carried Haitian dance abroad. Life magazine called it the little world’s fair. It ran to 8 June 1950 and drew 250,000 visitors.
