Popular army enters Les Cayes; Toureau blows up the arsenal
Haitian
On 9 March 1843, the popular army made its entry there under the orders of Charles Hérard the elder. General Toureau refused to surrender, and blew up the arsenal, at a time when resistance to the revolution against President Boyer was due to cease. This act of military devotion was celebrated by the poet of the Cayes Etienne Berret. However, Toureau sacrificed his life to no profit for the State, and destroyed properties that did not belong to him. It was a courageous act of vain pride, much more than a heroic act. He was considered a madman, because of the uselessness of his costly devotion.
Rouzier tells this under the entry Cayes (les).
