Political independence is proclaimed
Haitian
The great prosperity of the city of Santo-Domingo, the principal settlement of this colony, was the reason it came gradually to be called Saint-Domingue, until the time when its political independence was proclaimed (1 January 1804). It then took back the name Haïti that the first islanders had given it.
Rouzier tells this under the entry HAÏTI: the general article.
