Poet Roland Morisseau dies in Montreal

Haitian

Roland Morisseau died in Montreal on 29 June 1995. He was born in Port-au-Prince on 22 September 1933 and schooled at the Lycee Louverture. With Anthony Phelps, Rene Philoctete, Davertige, Serge Legagneur and Auguste Thenor he founded the group Samba, which became Haiti Litteraire and remade Haitian poetry in the early 1960s. Duvalier’s pressure pushed him out of the country in 1965. He taught for about thirty years at the Ecole polyvalente de Pointe-aux-Trembles and kept publishing. He died in the city of his exile, thirty years after he left home.
