Assotto Saint, poet of Black gay New York, dies of AIDS

Assotto Saint died of AIDS in New York on 29 June 1994. He was born Yves Francois Lubin at Les Cayes on 2 October 1957 and came to New York as a teenager. He wrote poetry and performed it, and when publishers would not print Black gay poets he founded Galiens Press and printed them himself – The Road Before Us: 100 Gay Black Poets in 1991, Here to Dare in 1992, Milking Black Bull in 1995. His own collections were Stations and Wishing for Wings. He was HIV-positive and made no secret of it, appearing in Marlon Riggs’ film No Regrets in 1993.
