Philippe Thoby-Marcelin is born in Port-au-Prince

Philippe Thoby-Marcelin was born in Port-au-Prince on 11 December 1904, into a diplomat’s family. He added Thoby, his mother’s family name, in tribute to his uncle Perceval Thoby. In 1927 he helped found La Revue Indigène with Jacques Roumain, Carl Brouard and Émile Roumer, and in essays of 1937 and 1938 he argued in print for Haitian Kreyòl. With his brother Pierre he wrote Canapé-Vert, which took the Prix du roman de l’Amérique latine in 1944. He co-founded the Parti Socialiste Populaire in 1946.
