Petion Savain, painter of the peasantry, is born in Port-au-Prince

Petion Savain was born in Port-au-Prince on this day. He trained in agronomy and law before he made his name with a brush. In 1939 he published La Case de Damballah, a novel of the countryside that he illustrated himself with engravings of peasant life. His painting Market took a bronze medal at the 1940 New York World’s Fair. He taught at the Centre d’Art and is counted among the founders of modern Haitian painting. He died in 1973.
