ORDINANCE OF THE KING, condemning Ship Captains to pay for the nègres found on board

Haitian

His MAJESTY having been informed that the Captains of the Vessels that go to the islands of America do not take the necessary precautions to prevent nègres belonging to the settlers of the said islands from boarding there to cross to France, which does considerable harm to these settlers and often leaves them unable to work their lands; wishing to remedy this, His Majesty has ordered and does order, wills and intends that all the nègres who shall be found on Vessels or Ships coming from the islands of America and landing in France, whether they hid there or otherwise, be paid for by the Captains of the said Vessels and Ships to the enslavers to whom they belong, at the price of four hundred livres each, of whatever age and strength they may be. His Majesty commands and orders M. the Comte de Toulouse, Admiral of France, the Vice-Admirals, and the Officers of the Amirautés of the Ports of his Kingdom, to see to the execution of the present Ordinance, etc.
