Nissage Saget is elected, and then does the rarest thing: he leaves

The two chambers met as a National Assembly and elected Nissage Saget president. Born at Saint-Marc on 20 September 1810, he had already served as provisional president in 1867 and had led the armies that finished Sylvain Salnave. He served the full four years. When senators pressed him to extend his mandate he refused, and on 14 May 1874 he handed the office over and went home. He is the first Haitian president to complete a term and walk away on the day it ended. He died in Port-au-Prince on 7 April 1880.
