Joe Gaetjens is born, and will beat England for another country

Joseph Edouard Gaetjens was born in Port-au-Prince on this day, to a Haitian mother and a father of German descent. He played for Etoile Haitienne, won a scholarship to Columbia in 1947 and washed dishes in a Harlem restaurant whose owner ran the Brookhattan club. On 29 June 1950 at Belo Horizonte he headed in the only goal as the United States beat England 1-0, the biggest upset the World Cup had seen. He was not an American citizen. He went home to Haiti and opened a dry-cleaning shop. On 8 July 1964 the Tontons Macoutes took him away because his brothers opposed Duvalier. He was never seen again. He was forty.
