Monplaisir Pierre saves Les Cayes from the Piquets
This city was the scene of grave events during the revolution of the Cacos, from 1869 to 1870. It had become the capital of the southern State of Haiti, of which General Michel Domingue was the provisional president. It was blockaded during that time, and was on the point of being taken on 24 May 1869 by the Piquets devoted to President Salnave, when General Monplaisir Pierre arrived from l’Anse-à-Veau and saved it, by taking the enemy from behind and passing through his lines. In May also, it was bombarded by the steamers Salnave, Alexandre Pétion and Trait d’Union (a sailing vessel). Among the figures who lent Salnave the support of their devotion in this circumstance, one counts in the first rank Generals Hippolyte, present president of the republic, and Morin Montasse, senator.
Rouzier tells this under the entry Cayes (les).
