Minister Monplaisir evacuates Pétion-ville
Haitian
On 16 July 1889, the Northerners spread over the plain of the Cul de Sac attacked Pétion-Ville, but they were repulsed, abandoning their dead, baggage and wounded. The Minister of the Interior Maxi Monplaisir distinguished himself in this affair; after having burned the finest properties, he was obliged to evacuate the place on 19 August in the night, surrounded on all sides by the enemy forces. Faced with this event, and seeing the whole South make common cause with the Northerners, President Légitime, reduced to defending himself in the single city of Port-au-Prince, decided to abdicate on 22 August in the afternoon.
Rouzier tells this under the entry PETION-VILLE.
