Manno Sanon, who scored Haiti’s World Cup goal, is born

Emmanuel Sanon, called Manno, was born on 25 June 1951. He won the Haitian championship with Don Bosco in 1971 and led the Grenadiers to the CONCACAF title in 1973, which took Haiti to the 1974 World Cup in West Germany. On 15 June 1974 in Munich he ran onto a pass from Philippe Vorbe and beat Dino Zoff – the first goal Italy’s keeper had conceded in 1,142 minutes. Haiti lost all three matches; Sanon scored both of the country’s goals. He later won the Belgian Cup with Beerschot in 1979. He died on 21 February 2008.
