Maitland begins evacuating the town
Haitian
On 23 April 1798 General Maitland began to evacuate the place by embarking his munitions. A treaty was signed in the town on 30 April between the Adjutant General Huin, provided with the powers of Toussaint Louverture, and the adjutant Nightingal, officer of the English army, of the ship the Abergaverny, by which it was agreed that the towns of Port Républicain, St Marc and the Arcahaie would be abandoned by the English to General Toussaint, and that enough time would be granted to the English troops to withdraw freely; that Toussaint would guarantee the life and the properties of the inhabitants who would remain in the colony. Hostilities were to cease on both sides for 5 weeks.
Rouzier tells this under the entry PORT-AU PRINCE [le].
