Altar of the Fatherland (Le Cap). Pierrot announces from it the approaching campaign against the East.

Discontent reached its height when, on 1 January 1846, Pierrot mounted the altar of the Fatherland and announced to the population and to the troops of the garrison of Le Cap the approaching opening of the campaign against the Eastern Part. The same day general Acaau delivered a speech at L’Anse-à-Veau on the occasion of the feast of Independence. He reminded the Haitians, whom he addressed as only our heads of State had ever done, that union made strength. He told them “that Haiti, for three years shaken by troubles owing to a band of factious men, had been on the verge of sinking into the violent division into which those treacherous men had dragged her.”
