When the insurgents, by then about a hundred in number, reached Gressier, they found battalion commander Barolet, commandant of that post, at the head of only some twenty men. Barolet, who knew nothing of what had just taken place at Croix-Martyrs and on the savanna of Port-au-Prince, resisted them and fired on them. Bédouet, struck in the leg by a ball, fell among his companions, who carried the post by the superiority of their numbers and continued their march on Léogane, which they reached on 18 September at about three o’clock in the morning, leading battalion commander Barolet as a prisoner.
