The forts of the town began to fire the mourning gun every ten minutes. In a chamber hung with black and lit with candles, the body lay in state upon a bed of parade, and the general officers formed the guard around it. While the funeral knell tolled, all the troops filed off toward the church, which was draped in mourning, marching ahead of the hearse; the body was placed on a catafalque inside the church. President Pierrot and all his staff attended; then the remains were carried to Marchand and buried at Fort Lasource.
