Bridge of Miragoâne. Augustin Cyprien’s vanguard files off toward it.

We have related that on 7 May general Riché had evacuated Aquin and that Augustin Cyprien had taken possession of it the next day. On 9 May the latter had the vanguard of his troops file off toward Miragoâne, in order to rally to Jeannot Jean-François, whose conduct he tacitly approved; wishing to detach himself entirely from Acaau, he was seeking a solid point of support. As early as 9 May Acaau, as we have seen, had protested against the nomination of Lazarre to the command of the departments of the West and of the South, and against the retention of the rank and the pension of Rivière Hérard. He contented himself for the moment with declaring that Guerrier was the man of his heart; but he went on performing acts of independence. We have seen that he had even written that he was disposed to adhere to the Manifesto of the West, but that he could not recognize Lazarre as commander-in-chief of the Departments of the West and of the South, nor admit that Rivière Hérard’s pension should be kept for him.
