Department of the North. Secedes under Pierrot and publishes its Manifesto against Rivière Hérard.

Before 3 May, and therefore before the deposition of Rivière, general Pierrot had proclaimed at Le Cap the secession of the North, firmly resolved not to go back on his determination unless Guerrier were named President of Haiti; he acted not for his personal interest, but for the restoration of the supremacy of his race. He had a star put on the Haitian flag, which was called the star of the North. The Dominicans had put a white cross on their flag; there was this difference between the East and the North, that the Dominicans had separated from the Haitians in heart and soul, and for ever, in order to guard themselves against Black supremacy, although they had not declared it officially.
