Savana Buey. Santana withdraws there from Azua and entrenches himself.

The losses of the Dominicans were insignificant. Judging that he could not withstand the numerical superiority of the Haitians, who were well armed and equipped, Santana evacuated the town of Azua in the night of 19 to 20 March, carrying off all the munitions of war and provisions he could. He was not unaware that the column commanded by general Souffrant was coming on by forced marches and might at any moment assail him by the south gate of the town. He withdrew to the savana Buey, eight leagues from Azua, and entrenched himself there.
