Port-au-Prince. A salute of seventeen guns announces the election of Rivière Hérard to the capital.

General Charles Hérard the elder was proclaimed President of the Haitian Republic. His election by so considerable a majority was received with the liveliest acclamations of the Assembly, of the audience and of the crowd that filled the approaches. The event was announced to the Capital by a salute of seventeen guns. Most of the deputies went to General Charles Hérard’s house and congratulated him, while on every side the people cried: Long live President Rivière Hérard!
