The ex-president Boyer, who, as we have related, had withdrawn to Kingston (Jamaica), had left for France. He arrived in Paris on 29 September; His Majesty the King of the French, Louis Philippe, granted him an audience and gave him the most sympathetic welcome. “Prince,” he said to him, “I am happy to see you.” Boyer answered him: “Sire, I am not a prince; I have been the head of a Republic.” The king shook his hand most cordially and added: “When one has governed a million men for twenty-five years, one has risen to the rank of princes.”
