Poix-la-Ravine. Pétion receives the news of Les Gonaïves there

The next day, the 1st of June, Pétion continued his march on Saint-Marc, crossed the district of the Boucassin, and on the 2nd halted at Poix-la-Ravine. It was there that he received Bazelais’s dispatches announcing the occupation of Les Gonaïves. He showed himself glad of it and published the news in the order of the day. The army continued its march full of enthusiasm, crossed Montrouis, and on the 3rd of June reached Dulgé, where it halted. Before attacking Saint-Marc, Pétion sent fresh instructions to Bazelais. He directed him to ship all the bronze guns that might be found at Les Gonaïves, and to reduce the town to ashes if he were forced to abandon it; to collect the provisions there and ration all the troops regularly; to send all the women to Port-au-Prince; to inform him in detail of the progress of the insurrection; to make every effort to hold on there; to send directly to L’Arcahaie all the couriers he dispatched to him; and to inform him of the quantity of arms, munitions and clothing he had found at Les Gonaïves.
