The Artibonite. One of the four departments of the Republic under the Constitution of 1806, formerly the department of Louverture

30. The territory of the Republic is divided into 4 departments, namely: the departments of the South, the West, the Artibonite and the North. The other departments shall be designated by the Senate, which shall fix their limits. 31. The departments of the South, the West, the Artibonite (formerly Louverture) and the North shall keep their limits as fixed by the law of the Central Assembly of Saint-Domingue dated 13 July 1801 on the division of the territory.
