Santo Domingo. Sortie against Magny repulsed; English offer of capitulation rejected

Suddenly the cannon of the place fell silent, and General Ferrand, at the head of a column of 1,000 men, made a sortie and advanced resolutely on the position General Magny held on the Santiago road. The Haitians received the enemy with a brisk fire of musketry and stood unshaken in their entrenchments. Magny, after spending the ardor of the French, dashed upon them followed by his grenadiers, overthrew them and drove them back into the place. The Haitians suffered few losses. Battalion Commander Lerebours had been hit by grapeshot. General Ferrand had been driven back so quickly that he had abandoned his wounded on the field of battle. The same day an English officer under flag of truce, sent by the commander of His Britannic Majesty’s squadron, came down into the city and proposed a capitulation to General Ferrand, who rejected it with indignation.
