General Christophe gave the solemnity all the brilliance of his imagination, and the festivities celebrated at Le Cap were the most splendid in the empire. César Télémaque, the former mayor of that town, who had shown himself very devoted to the French up to the last moment and had nearly been the victim of his love for the old mother country, sang and presented to Dessalines at the imperial palace a piece of verse which was then loudly applauded. At Port-au-Prince and in the other towns the same ceremony took place with order and enthusiasm; cries of Long live the Emperor were heard everywhere, and the people, gathered in the chief town of each arrondissement, sanctioned by their acclamations and by addresses to Dessalines the act by which the title of Emperor had been conferred on him.
