Meanwhile, in August, the governor-general learned that Bonaparte, who in 1802 had been named consul for life by the Senate, had had himself proclaimed emperor at Saint-Cloud by the senators, with Cambacérès at their head, on 28 floréal (18 May 1804), and that he would soon have himself consecrated by Pope Pius VII.
