The same day, 30 Germinal (20 April), Vilton wrote to Christophe from La Petite-Anse that he had received his letter, and that his submission to General Leclerc would win him a protector who would himself take care to provide for his future; he added that he had shown his letter to the captain-general and to General Hardy. Hardy also wrote to General Christophe, under the date of 30 Germinal. He told him that the French, after fighting for twelve years for liberty, would not be so vile in their own eyes as to tarnish their glory by restoring slavery. He ended his letter by telling him to come to the Vaudreuil plantation to make his proposals of submission to him by word of mouth.
