Cabœuil. Rochambeau follows it into the Grands Cahos.

Rochambeau and Hardy were encamped at the bridge of the Ester. Captain-General Leclerc ordered them to scour the mountains of the Cahos, where Mesdames Dessalines, Louverture, Vernet and Gabart and a crowd of other families had taken refuge, and then to reach Mirebalais so as to fall on the rear of the Indigenous army, which he meant still to keep between two fires. Toussaint, driven from Petite-Rivière de l’Artibonite, was to be thrown onto the bayonets of Hardy or of Rochambeau. Rochambeau, accompanied by General Rigaud, set out for the Grands Cahos on 11 Ventôse (2 March), following the river of the Cabœuil. At the Morne-à-Pipe he took in a great number of whites who had taken refuge there. At the Cahos the chef de bataillon Aignan, a man of color very devoted to Toussaint, was in command, encamped on the Magnan plantation with a company of the militia of Dodard and three companies of the 8th. The French wished, before reaching Mirebalais, to seize the chests of money carried into the mountains by Toussaint’s order. As soon as he learned of the march of the divisions of Hardy and Rochambeau through the Cahos, Dessalines sent Commandant Aignan a battalion of the 4th to reinforce him.
